Heritage

The Town of Cottesloe has buildings and sites of cultural heritage significance to the State and the district.

The heritage of the district has been identified and is controlled in the various statutory documents shown below.

The following non-statutory documents also have a bearing when determining whether demolition approval will be granted or refused.

Municipal Inventory

Buildings in Category 1 of the Municipal Inventory are also listed on the State Register of Heritage Places and are highly unlikely to receive demolition approval. The approval of the Town of Cottesloe and the State Heritage Council is required for any alterations or additions to the building and its surroundings.

Buildings in Category 2 of the Municipal Inventory are considered to be highly important in terms of local heritage significance. Demolition approvals may be granted by the Council upon review and subsequent downgrading of the listing. As is the case with all buildings, development approval is required for any proposed alterations or additions.

Buildings in Categories 3, 5 and 6 of the Municipal Inventory may be demolished with the approval of the Manager of Development Services acting under delegated authority from Council. They are treated no differently to any other residential dwelling in this regard. As is the case with all buildings, development approval is required for any proposed alterations or additions.

There are no buildings in Category 4 of the Municipal Inventory.

Category 7 of the Municipal Inventory has no practical meaning as it is simply a listing of those buildings and places that have been delisted or demolished since the original Municipal Inventory was adopted in 1995.

Draft Town Planning Scheme No.3

Council is currently reviewing its position in relation to heritage and town planning controls.

It is expected that draft Town Planning Scheme No. 3 will contain a schedule of heritage listed buildings drawn from Categories 1 & 2 of the Municipal Inventory. It is intended that these buildings will be protected by town planning law from unsympathetic redevelopment pressures.
