Five Norfolk Island pine trees have been replanted by the Town of Cottesloe today after community consultation emphatically endorsed the permanent planting of the trees.

Originally planted in July as part of the Town's Street Tree Master Plan, the trees were temporarily relocated following community feedback calling for consultation in accordance with the Town's Beach Policy.

The subsequent two-week consultation process gave the community an opportunity to help shape the future of this part of Cottesloe’s beachfront and attracted an unprecedentedly high number of respondents.

74% of respondents supported the permanent replanting of the trees, citing reasons such as increased shade and canopy, and a continuation of Cottesloe’s iconic pines.

On August 25, 2026, after considering community feedback, Council endorsed the permanent replanting of five of the trees on Marine Parade, with the other two pines finding a home elsewhere in the Town’s planting program.

The Town’s Parks and Operations team will be tending to the trees’ needs as they adjust to being replanted.

“The Town of Cottesloe is committed to listening to our community and increasing our tree canopy - and with the replanting of these trees happily we’re doing both,” said Mayor Melissa Harkins.

“Cottesloe’s pines are at the heart of what it means to be in Cottesloe - as a resident or a visitor. We are delighted the young trees have come home to Marine Parade and we look forward to caring for them and seeing them grow.”
