Installation of the Cottesloe shark barrier has been delayed by several days due to adverse weather conditions.
The barrier was scheduled to be installed for the 2026/27 beach-going season on Wednesday 7th October, but swell and weather forecasts have made installation unsafe for the contractors. Installation is now rescheduled for Monday 12th October.
The barrier, which cost the Town of Cottesloe $120,00 per year, is installed during early October and remains in place until the end of April, providing a protected swimming area for beach users throughout the peak summer period.
Town of Cottesloe Mayor Melissa Harkins said the annual installation of the barrier reflected the Town's ongoing commitment to community safety while maintaining access to one of Perth's most iconic beaches.
"Cottesloe Beach is a world-class and much-loved beach, and it is also one of Perth's safest thanks to the Town's commitment to the shark barrier every year," Mayor Harkins said.
“We are mindful the community is eager to have the shark barrier installed as soon as possible, given recent tragic events at Sorrento and increased shark activity at local beaches.
“We look forward to welcoming swimmers to our beautiful beach for a safe summer of swimming after next Monday ’s installation is complete.”
